I don’t hesitate. “What every soon-to-be married man and woman would do.”

She closes her eyes slowly, opening them again with a sigh. “But we’re not married. We’re not actually engaged. We’re not anything.”

“Don’t say that,” I almost bark. “We’re not ‘not anything.’”

Her stare narrows. “Then what are we?”
