βI need to talk to you,β he said as soon as he reached me, his hands grasping for mine as I glanced around.
There wasnβt much of a crowd at the moment, which I was grateful for, but the few people waiting on their to-go orders were definitely watching us with interest. Matthew created a scene everywhere he went, and the restaurant was no exception.
βNo thanks,β I responded, feeling a little embarrassed at the intimate knowledge he now held.
It was going to be this big deal between usβit always turned into a big deal.
βWe need to finish our conversation.β His thumb started making small circles on top of my hand.
βWe donβt really need to have a conversation about it at all,β I said, shaking my head. βEspecially not here.β
Matthew continued holding my hands. His were so big and all-encompassing, the same way that he was. βYouβre right,β he agreed a little too easily. βLet me take you out tonight. A real date. Iβm ready to move past the friend zone.β
He still wants to date me?
βYouβve been in the friend zone for five seconds.β
My anxiety actually started to ease. Instead of making me uncomfortable, like he tended to do, he was having the opposite effect.
βFive seconds too long if you ask me.β He grinned. βCome on, Bells. Letβs stop playing this game.β
βWhat game?β
βThe one where you pretend you donβt want me just as much as I want you.β
βI never said I didnβt want you. I just said we donβt know each other anymore,β I clarified because wanting the man was not the issue.
βYou were willing to get to know that stupid fireman on a date. Why canβt you do the same for me?β
Dammit.
That was actually a fair point.
He released one of my hands and poked the side of my head with his finger. βI can see your wheels spinning. Give me one date. If itβs awful and thereβs nothing between us, Iβll leave you alone.β
I had to stop myself from laughing hysterically. As if thereβd ever be nothing between us. At least not on my end. I wasnβt sure how to not have feelings for him.
βTwo first dates in one day? Thatβs gotta be some kind of record.β I laughed, but Matthew was not amused. His jaw flexed before he leaned closer to me, his lips at my ear.
βIβll make you forget all about that other guy. Say yes, Bells.β
I sucked in a breath before finally caving. Denying him was exhausting. And to be honest, I wanted to go.
βYes,β I said.
Matthewβs smile took up his entire face as he dropped my other hand and pumped a fist in the air. βIβll pick you up at seven. Youβre not working, right?β He glanced toward the bar, where Anna was still trying to eavesdrop.
βI have the day off.β
βWeβll mourn the loss of the glasses later,β he teased.
I instantly wondered how many Anna had broken today. βShe broke another one?β
βOne that I know of,β he said before giving me a kiss on the cheek. βDress for the resort. Thatβs where Iβm taking you,β he instructed before disappearing out the door as quickly as heβd come through it.
That man was something else, making demands and then disappearing before I could even agree or argue.
BLURB:
Crushing on Matthew O'Grady didn't work out very well for me in the past. When he left Sugar Mountain for the NHL, he took my hopeful teenage heart with him. I was crushed beyond repair, and he never even knew it. But now he's back in town, working at the resort his family owns and coming into my bar every. single. shift. He claims to want me, but a guy like Matthew doesn't want any one woman for long.
Bella Sanchez is an absolute smoke show. I know I have a reputation of for being a playboy; the kind of guy who sleeps around with no strings attached. But that was the old me. The new me is back home in Sugar Mountain for good and looking for all the strings. The only problem is, Bella doesn't believe me when I tell her I want her.
But I'm a stubborn man, and I won't stop chasing her until she's mine.
