EXCERPT:
โYou came to my game?โ
She shrugs, her smile sweet. โFigured your ego could handle another fan.โ
Does she really mean she came to support me? Sheโd been on tour since last fall. Her personal time must be limited and precious, so itโs hard to believe she flew all this way to see me play ball.
And yet, here she stands wearing a T-shirt with my name on the back, and Iโm liking it a little too much.
Looking around me, she narrows her eyes. โAny sign of the ferret.โ
โFerret?โ
Felicity, she mouths.
โNo ferret. Not today.โ Who is even looking? I have my girls here. And Cadence. โYou met Ruby and Javier.โ
Cadence smiles at the couple lingering close by but giving us space. โWeโre best friends already.โ
โOf course you are.โ I laugh again, jiggle June against my chest and then set her down, flinching once more.
โIโll take the girls home now,โ Ruby says. โWeโve had enough popcorn and hot dogs. I think an apple or two might be in order.โ With her hand reaching for Juneโs, she adds, โGood game, Ford.โ
Javier pats my left shoulder and I try not to recoil from the sharp sting.
Zelle takes a few steps forward but then turns back. โWhen will you be home, Dad?โ
โOne hour,โ I say. โSixty minutes.โ
โIโll be counting.โ Then she takes a step. โOne.โ Another step. โTwo.โ Her voice drones on as she moves forward and my chest aches from her fear.
โBetter make it one hundred,โ I call after her and I hear Zelle start all over again.
โYou okay, cowboy?โ Cadence asks as I watch the girls walk away and reach for my bat bag, hiking it up and over my right arm.
โYeah. Itโs just my shoulder.โ I roll my left again, the pain more than a pinch. Iโll need ice and lots of it.
Cadence walks with me toward the training facility, and Iโm hopeful of pulling her away from the prying eyes. Within a few feet, we reach the path leading to the second building and most people respect our privacy as if an invisible line in the pavement is drawn once the team reaches this spot.
โSo, whyโd you really come?โ I bump my elbow into her arm.
Cadence grabs the bill of her capโmy capโand tugs it downward. โI heard baseball players are superstitious and I worried this hat might be special. I thought Iโd bring it back to you, but I was running late, and the game had already started. Some guy wouldnโt let me near the dugout even though I explained I had your lucky cap.โ
โLucky cap, huh?โ
โOf course. Itโs what you were wearing when you met me.โ She smiles wide. Her mouth full.
Those blue eyes dancing.
I shake my head. โWhich guy?โ
โDonโt know. A silver fox wearing an official jersey.โ
Silver fox? What the fuck is a silver fox? An old guy with gray hair? โHalf the coaching staff might qualify under that description.โ
โSeeing as I know who Ross Davis is.โ She exaggerates her heart throbbing by patting her chest with both hands three times. โIt wasnโt him.โ
โGot a thing for silver foxes?โ
โNah. Just hot center fielders.โ
I stop short and Cadence takes a step forward before turning to face me. We stare at one another a second before I clear my throat. โHow long are you in town?โ
She sighs. โI need to fly out first thing tomorrow morning.โ She holds her hands upward and spreads them apart like a headline as she says, โBreaking news in the music industry.โ
โCare to share with the class?โ
โMaybe over a drink?โ Her brows hitch.
โNot tequila.โ
She flirtatiously pouts before straightening her lips.
โHow do you feel about milk?โ
Her eyes widen. โI donโt drink it. Why?โ
โItโs what Iโll be serving with dinner.โ
Cadenceโs mouth falls open and her head nods once before she tilts it the slightest bit. โFord Sylver, are you asking me over for dinner?โ
I think I might be. My cheeks flame and it isnโt because of the hot Arizona sun. Holding out my hand, I say, โGive me your phone.โ
With a huge grin on her face, Cadence hands me her phone where Cowboy is indeed listed as a favorite right after Enya. I add my address to the contact so she has it with the number and can easily map a route to the condo.
โHow about six?โ I need time to ice my arm and shower. And maybe tidy up my place a bit.
She smiles wide. โWhat can I bring?โ
I bite my lip before suggesting her fine ass is enough.
โJust you, TQ.โ Sheโs going to be more than I can handle.
โSee you at six.โ Nodding once, she steps aside so I can pass for the training facility but once I pass her, I turn and walk backwards.
โHey, Cadence? Did you see me knock it out of the ballpark?โ
โReally?โ She tips her head back as the bill of the cap is covering her face too much. โHadnโt noticed,โ she teases. Her gaze lowers slowly, taking me in from top to toe. โI was too busy objectifying you in those pants. No one told me baseball pants were so sexy.โ
My face flames a thousand watts again.
โIโm turning around now, Cadence. See you at six.โ
โIโm going to objectify you again as you walk away.โ She laughs and I swivel for the training center as I give her a backhand wave.
While smiling all the way to the building.
BLURB:
Love was a losing battle for this country music darling and a single dad, baseball star until one night brings them together and one small town sets the field for a possible winning streak.
They call me Lady Boss. Maneater. Queen. But beneath the makeup, blond wig, and glitzy costumes, Iโm just a country girl who likes to sing. I donโt hate men, Iโm just struggling to find a good one. Iโve learned my lesson. Fool me once, and it will never, ever happen again.
So Iโm baffled when I meet Ford Sylver.
A superstar in his own right as centerfielder for the Chicago Anchors baseball team, plus a single dad to three adorable little girls, we share a moment when I save his firm backside and pretend heโs mine. Something that he can never be.
Only, when he suffers a season-changing injury and I need a place to disappear, we both end up back in Sterling Falls, where Iโm suddenly and unwittingly his nanny.
Thereโs danger in having a wild side. Iโll try anything once. However, forced into close quarters with Ford, acting as his personal nurse, and caring for his three little ones might backfire. Because Iโm staring at all I ever wanted and never thought would happen for me.
After losing at love in the past, could I finally be on a winning streak?
