“How are you?” Mat asked.
The question wasn’t one I’d expected. One I wasn’t sure how to answer.
Taken out of context, he could simply be asking how work was, how life in general treated me, but I sensed there was something deeper to it. After all, this was the first proper conversation we’d had in years.
I stopped, stock still in the middle of the path. It took him a couple of steps to realise what I’d done, and he turned to face me.
“Honestly, I’m confused, Mat.” I drained the remainder of my beer, needing it to help me say what I wanted to. “One day we were fine, making plans for our future, then the next you’re telling me you’re going to America with the band. Scott said you had to.” Even saying the words out loud made my chest contract. The anger I’d felt at the time reared its head again. Anger directed at Mat, Scott, anyone associated with Trash Gun.
He dropped his half-empty cup on the ground and stepped towards me. His hands dripped my upper arms, his face inches from mine, those molten chocolate pools gazing directly into my soul.
My breath hitched. I hated how he still affected me so much with one single touch.

“Why didn’t you tell me then?
Mat’s head dropped, his eyes fixed firmly on the pavement beneath us. “You didn’t give me the chance. You either yelled at me or wouldn’t speak to me. And then you left.”
I screwed up my eyes, tears pricking at the lids.
“I loved you, Bree. I didn’t want to leave you, but I had to save my family.” His gaze lifted and met mine again. “I don’t think I every truly stopped loving you.”
His admission made me swallow hard. I slid my hands up to cover his, feeling the familiar warmth of his skin. His fingers tangled in mine, pulling me flush against his body.
So right, yet so wrong.

It had been years since I’d seen Mat play live. From his confident performance, it was crystal clear he was the one who played stages every night. He prowled around, owning the bass lines of each of the songs, even though they weren’t his. He and his brother riffed off each other, drawing the audience in and playing to them. If I closed my eyes, I rolled back the years. Back to when we were together, when I followed them to pubs in the arse end of nowhere, drinking lukewarm white wine, just to watch the band and spend time with Mat.
When my eyelids fluttered open again, Mat stared right into the core of me. He winked, then blew a kiss in my direction.

I stared directly into her eyes, losing myself in those icy blue pools, the same as I always had. “I miss this.” My finger swirled around, pointing at the drinks, the joint, then finally at Bree. “I miss you.”
Her lips parted, forming a silent gasp. She blinked fast, her eyelashes brushing her cheeks. “What about Ellie?”
“What about her?”
“Aren’t you and her, you know, together?” Bree twisted a strand of blue hair around her finger, something she always did when nerves overcame her.
Slowly, I shook my head. “She may have her own fashion brand, be effortlessly gorgeous and best friends with a supermodel, but—”
“Oh, she’s absolutely perfect then.” Her shoulders sagged and she dropped deeper into the sofa cushions.
“She doesn’t have paint on her fingernails, or a Disney princess plaster protecting a cut on her knuckle.” I took Bree’s hand in mine, my thumb caressing the two things I’d mentioned. “Or a glorious wild streak of blue, which I’ve always loved.” My other hand stroked her hair, where her own was still entangled.
I watched Bree’s breath hitch at my words, as the realisation sank in.
Ellie was nothing compared to Bree.
I wanted to erase four years of hurt. Four years of hooking up with random women who meant nothing. Because all I wanted was right here in front of me.
