โYou good?โ
Boone jerked his head yes and tried not to stare at the swinging double doors of Greyโs saloon. He knew he was waiting for Piper. His father, the legendary rodeo star, the bronc and bull rider whoโd single-handedly saved his familyโs ranch with his daring and earnings, saw too much, and Boone felt ten again and wished heโd taken his dad up on the beer. But he knew if he kept silent the moment, such as it was, would pass.
โHoping youโll stop at the ranch on your way out,โ his dad finally said into the fraught silence. โGot some equipment that needs your magic touch.โ
Boone nodded. Anything mechanical he could handle. His life, though? He seemed always poised to fuck it up.
โAnd Iโll need your help with the rodeo sound system, later today or early tomorrow.โ His dad didnโt change tone, but Boone knew he was confused and disappointed. And fishing for answers, but if his dad said anything else, Boone .
didnโt hear it because right then Piper flowed through the double doors.
They immediately locked eyes, and it was just like the first time. Every time he saw her it was like the first timeโthat sense of falling, of breathlessness, and of a recognition that went soul-deep even as it made no sense.
โโScuze me. Going to ask a girl to dance.โ Boone pulled away from his wall slouch, handed his pool cue to a cowboy whoโd been watching and walked toward Piper with purpose.

Impossible.
It was a mistake.
Boone would have told her he was from Marietta.
He wouldnโt have let her read all about the town on the web site like that and let her go on and on about the town and how cute it was, and how she felt at home here when he was the one who was home.
The announcer read a few stats, even told a joke or two while Piper stared numbly at a beautiful blonde woman and a younger version of her holding up a sign with a picture of Boone. Piper recognized the young woman sheโd seen briefly yesterday as the singer of โAmerica the Beautifulโ from the grand reopening. They were in the family section with another couple and a tween girl who held up another Boone sign.
Piper had never sat in the family section.
And she hadnโt been invited today to sit with his real family.
The chute opened and Boone, nearly horizontal to the bronc, burst out. His left hand was stretched out high as the bronc bucked, swinging its body sideways before slamming up and down. Boone kept his body loose and nimble anticipating the moves before they happened, but it still astonished Piper how Boone held on. How any of them held on to such a wicked force of physics.
She laughed a guttural โhaโ as if to see if she could still speak.
She couldnโt believe how stupid sheโd been. Naรฏve.
Great sex wasnโt love.
And Boone definitely didnโt love her. And traveling with Boone for another month until the tour finished wouldnโt make a difference.
Eight seconds. The audience roared their approval. Piper clutched the fence like she was going to fall and stared, still in total shock. The cheers, the dirt, the smell of sawdust, hotdogs and popcorn and animal all just floated around in some other world she wasnโt a part of.
Sheโd been lying to herself as clearly as Boone had been lying.
AUTHOR BIO
Sinclair has loved reading romance novels since she discovered Barbara Cartland historical romances when she was in sixth grade. By seventh grade, she was haunting the library shelves looking to fall in love over and over again with the heroes born from the imaginations of her favorite authors. After teaching writing classes and workshops to adults and teens for many years in Seattle and Portland, she returned to her first love of reading romances and became an editor for Tule Publishing last year. Sinclair lives in Oregonโs wine country where she and her family own a small vineyard of Pinot Noir and where she dreams of being able to write at a desk like Jane Austen instead of in parking lots waiting for her kids to finish one of their 12,000 extracurricular activities.
